POSITION TITLE: Teacher of the Visually Impaired

 

SITES: District-Wide

 

 

REPORTS TO: EC Director

 

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:  10 Month

 

SALARY: Per NC State Salary Schedule – Teacher Pay Scale

 

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIRED:

 

* Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an approved education program required.

* Hold or be eligible to hold appropriate NC EC Licensure from the NC Department of Public Instruction- Visually Impaired K-12

* Experience working with visually impaired youth in a school setting is highly preferred.

* Knowledge of and capable of operating and teaching Assistive Technology to students who are blind and/or severely visually impaired.

* Knowledge of federal & state processes for students with disabilities.

* Experience in teaching, reading and writing UEB braille and Nemeth Code, performing Functional Vision Assessments, Vision and Media Assessments and writing reports preferred.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

* Traveling to students assigned schools to provide direct and/or supplemental services related to vision loss.

* Provide training, assistance and guidance to students, parents, educators and agencies regarding services to the visually impaired and blind.

* Develop, select and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of each student’s ability

* Maintaining appropriate records and following the required procedures and practices of Currituck Schools. Qualification and Special Requirements

* Prepare for classes assigned, and show evidence of preparation upon request of the supervisor.

* Plan for and utilize instructional methods, resources, and evaluation techniques that motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives.

* Monitors student performance and growth.

* Take all necessary and permitted safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

* Establish relationships with parents, colleagues, administrators, and the community to enhance learning opportunities for the students.

* Have availability to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when requested to do so under reasonable circumstances.

* Work to maximize educator effectiveness through support strategies, and appropriate technology to enhance instructional planning and assessment Self-assess effectiveness and demonstrate successful application of skills and information acquired to increase effectiveness.

* Familiar with Orientation and Mobility concepts in order to provide direct instruction for the purpose of assisting visually impaired students to move about independently in the school and in the community

* Evaluate the progress of program participants and conduct on-going reviews of the IEPs.

* Facilitate and model teamwork, leadership and collaboration

* Base professional development activities on needs of EC teachers and facilitate reflective practices on professional development

* Advocate for EC students, educators, schools and sound educational programs

* Commitment to high achievement for all students

* Positive role model both professionally and personally

* All other duties as assigned by the EC Director
